- 1994-2008, founding member of the Singapore National Medical Ethics Committee (appointed by the Minister for Health)
- 2001-2006, founding member of the Singapore national Bioethics Advisory Committee (BAC) appointed by the Singapore Cabinet to advise it on the regulation of biomedical research in Singapore
- 2001-2006, Chair of the BAC Human Genetics Subcommittee
- 2003-2006, independent director on the board of directors of Singapore Health Services Pte Ltd (SingHealth), a holdings company wholly-owned by the Singapore government responsible for one of the main groups of government-subsidized hospitals and healthcare facilities in Singapore
- 2000-2014, a statutory board member of the Singapore Nursing Board
- 1998-2014, a member of the Singapore Ministry of Health’s Advisory Committee on Transplantation (the committee has statutory oversight of transplants carried out in Singapore)
- Visiting Research Fellow, Merton College, Oxford University (Trinity Term, 2013)
- Conferred the Public Service Medal, by the President of the Republic of Singapore on the occasion of the 2012 Singapore National Day Awards (The Public Service Medal “… may be awarded to any person who has rendered commendable public service in Singapore or for his achievement in the field of arts and letters, sports, the sciences, business, the professions and the labour movement”)
